Eight layers of protection
These features work together across every trip. Some are automatic, some are in your hands — all are designed to ensure you arrive safely.
SOS Button
One tap triggers a live emergency alert. Your GPS coordinates are shared instantly with our command centre, emergency contacts, and SAPS dispatch where applicable.
Live Trip Sharing
Share a secure browser link so trusted contacts can follow your entire journey in real time — no app required on their end. Link expires automatically when the trip ends.
RideCheck
AI-powered monitoring detects unexpected stops, off-route deviations, and anomalies. Sends check-in prompts and escalates to our response team if unanswered.
NightSafe
Between 10pm and 5am, enhanced safety protocols activate: mandatory lit pickup zones, identity re-verification at pickup, and direct line to our night command team.
Driver Verification
Every driver undergoes a criminal background check, drug screening, and vehicle roadworthy inspection before their first trip — and annually thereafter.
Emergency Response
Buslyft's Safety Response Team operates around the clock. In a verified emergency, we coordinate with SAPS, ER24, and local authorities in under 3 minutes.
Trip Recording
Audio recording of trips is available on request. Recordings are encrypted, stored for 72 hours, and only released to law enforcement with a valid order.
Trusted Contacts
Add up to 5 trusted people who are automatically notified when you book a trip, when it starts, and if your SOS is triggered — so someone always knows where you are.
What happens when you press SOS
Every second matters in an emergency. Our SOS protocol is designed to deliver a coordinated response in under three minutes from the moment you press the button.
Step 01
Rider triggers SOS
The rider taps and holds the SOS button inside the app for 3 seconds. A countdown gives time to cancel if triggered by mistake.
Step 02
Location locked & shared
Real-time GPS coordinates are captured every 5 seconds and immediately transmitted to our Safety Command Centre and all registered trusted contacts.
Step 03
Trip locked in place
The ongoing trip is locked — the driver cannot end the trip or alter the destination. The route and vehicle details are frozen for the incident record.
Step 04
Emergency contacts notified
All trusted contacts receive an SMS and in-app alert with the rider's current location, vehicle details, driver name, and a live tracking link.
Step 05
Response team calls
A Buslyft Safety Agent calls the rider's number within 60 seconds. If unanswered, SAPS dispatch is requested to the last known location.
Step 06
SAPS dispatch activated
Where available, our pre-registered SAPS liaison contacts the nearest station. In Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, and Durban, average police response time is under 9 minutes.
Enhanced protection from 10pm to 5am
Night rides come with heightened risks. NightSafe is Buslyft's overnight protocol — a set of additional safeguards that activate automatically after 10pm and run until 5am every night.
Lit pickup zones only
After 10pm, the app redirects pickups to verified lit zones — petrol stations, shopping mall entrances, and designated safe spots.
Identity re-verification
Both rider and driver scan each other's QR codes before the trip starts. A mismatch prevents the trip from beginning.
Automatic check-ins
RideCheck sends in-app check-in prompts every 10 minutes on night rides. Missed check-ins escalate automatically.
Direct night command line
A dedicated 24-hour number connects directly to the night Safety Response Team — no queues, no IVR menus.
Auto trip sharing
Between 10pm and 5am, trip sharing is automatically sent to all trusted contacts at the start of every ride — no manual action needed.
Increased GPS frequency
Location updates increase from every 30 seconds to every 5 seconds during night hours, enabling more precise route monitoring.
NightSafe is automatic
No settings to change — NightSafe activates on its own every night at 10pm and deactivates at 5am. You can also enable it manually at any time from the Safety menu.
Every driver is rigorously vetted
We do not cut corners on driver verification. Every person who drives on the Buslyft platform passes through six mandatory checks — at onboarding and every year thereafter.
Criminal Background Check
Full SAPS criminal record clearance via MIE or similar accredited bureau. Disqualifying offences include any violent crime, sexual offence, fraud, or DUI in the past 10 years.
Drug & Alcohol Screening
A 5-panel drug test is required at onboarding and again at randomised intervals. Drivers may also be tested following any safety incident.
Vehicle Roadworthy Inspection
The vehicle must pass a certified roadworthy test at an accredited centre. Tyres, brakes, lights, and seatbelts are assessed separately. Vehicles older than 8 years are not permitted.
NLTA PDP Verification
A valid Professional Driving Permit issued by the NLTA is mandatory. We verify against the eNaTIS database in real time. PDPs are re-checked at renewal.
Defensive Driving Assessment
New drivers complete a Buslyft defensive driving assessment covering emergency braking, passenger handling, and route behaviour. A score of 80% or above is required.
Annual Re-verification
Background checks, drug tests, and vehicle inspections repeat every 12 months. Any safety incident triggers an immediate re-verification.
Verified badge
Drivers who have completed all six checks and maintained a 4.8+ rating for 90 days receive the Buslyft Verified badge on their profile, visible to every rider before they book.
"Safety in South Africa's transport sector is not just a feature — it is a moral obligation. Every process we have built, every protocol we have written, starts from the question: what would it take for every single rider to get home safely? We will not stop iterating until the answer is: everything we can possibly do."
